What is most likely to strike you upon meeting JUSTICE League/Asylum recording artist Laws – other than the fact that he doesn’t look like the average rapper – is a clear confidence and sense of self. Those aren’t necessarily common qualities among his peers. Continue Reading

One thing Eminem’s life has never been is stable. From his tumultuous childhood, to his rise to fame and controversy, to the murder of his best friend and fellow D-12 member Proof, the life of Marshall Mathers has never been one which was easy to decipher. Read More

Happy June 27 (R.I.P. DJ Screw)

Lost in the in the shuffle of the Pac’s, Biggie’s, Jam Master Jay’s and Eazy-E’s of hip-hop’s deceased legendary community remains a name synonymous with one of the most popular sub-genre’s of music, DJ Screw and his “Chopped & Screwed” brand. Although the rumors behind his death continue to run rampant (a contaminated cup of “syrup” being one ), his impact goes without question.

The significance of this post you ask?

“June 27″, while not signaling neither his death or birth date, is the title of one of his most popular mixtapes and Chapter 12 in a 226 part series (which is still going on today) making him one of the most prolific entities in the history of music. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Screw in the summer of 1999 by my boy Will, who was a few years older than me and attended college in the area while living at his grandmother’s house, which subsequently was in my neighborhood.

Back then, the most popular artist associated with Screw was a rapper out of Houston by the name of Lil’ Flip and for good reason. While he’s the poster child of irrelevancy in hip-hop today, ten years ago Flip was, for lack of a better term, THE SH*T. He deserved the title of “Freestyle King”, dismantling every instrumental he touched with his characteristic laid back, smooth flow.

So if by chance you’ve been living under a rock and/or slept on the genius that was Robert Davis, begin to redeem yourself here. While only posting two tracks from the “June 27″ tape (go support that), I have included “F*ck Action 12″, however. R&B + Chopped & Screwed = beautiful, beautiful music.

DL: Never Trust

DL: 3rd Coast

Bonus: Swishahouse–F*ck Action 12

If you think you’ve heard that beat before, you have.
