Drama Beats: "The Come Up"

Chris “Drama” Pfaff is quite the impressive chess player. Figuratively, not literally. Following his high school graduation, Chris was forced with one of life’s most intricate scenarios. Many in his position chose higher education, while others chose the military and a large portion matriculated immediately into the work force. For the young man who grew up attending the same house parties as LeBron James in Akron, Ohio, (his parents even took James’ senior photos) he ultimately chose the “family business.”

For those unfamiliar with Drama’s past, he is the cousin of Rob Drydek, star of the highly successful MTV reality show, “Rob & Big.” Pfaff’s role on the show served as the younger cousin who moved to Los Angeles in hopes of achieving dreams of breaking into the music industry. In the process, being subjected to the seemingly senseless and comedic tasks of his cousin and Christopher “Big Black” Boykin were all apart of the on-air hazing process. According to Pfaff, to Rob and Big’s credit, everything he was forced to do was “100% real” and was never once given scripts, call sheets or season plans.

However, one prank which never made it to television ranks as the most memorable, scary and hilarious during Drama’s stint on the show.

“Long story short, they were messing around in the kitchen right after they got Meaty [their dog]. So I walked upstairs and Big Black was trying to squeeze into Meaty’s dog cage. Of course he can’t get in there so I’m like ‘what are you all doing?’,” said Drama. The story gets more intriguing from there.

“So I hop in this thing and the moment I do they closed the door, locked it and ran it out and placed it by the edge of the pool. By this time I’m yelling not to push me in because I have my phone in my pocket. No one will ever admit to it, but someone pushes the cage in the pool and I float to the bottom,” said Drama. “The moment I hit the bottom, I’m like, ‘Oh my God. They just killed me.’ I’m kicking trying to open the cage and as soon as I get ready to take a breath, Rob jumps in and pulls the cage out.”

Even with the ridiculing, Drama thoroughly enjoyed his time on the show and always approached his situation as hilariously entertaining, especially when looking at it from an outside perspective. The show would eventually come to a halt when Boykin moved to Texas after the birth of his child. Neither Drama or Rob hold any ill will towards their former co-star and see their new hit show, “Fantasy Factory,” as a smooth transition. The program has delivered high ratings to the network, including MTV’s highest ratings for a series premiere since “Wildboyz” and “Viva La Bam” in October 2003.

Aside from a successful career thus far on television, venturing into fashion has always been in the back of his mind. Learning from his cousin ultimately led to his decision to take the chance and create his own line of street wear, “Young & Reckless.”

“I’ve always been into the newest clothing, like Nikes and all that stuff. Rob actually owns this company called Rouge Status and I saw that I may have the ability to broadcast materials to the entire world every week. I saw that now is the time to do this and take the chance and go for it. And that’s what it was,” said Pfaff.

Aside with the successes of his new company, Drama has experienced a side of business which had previously been unfamiliar.

“I will say that this is the first time in any business that I do where I see the effects of the recession. A lot of these companies aren’t in the position to be taking chances on a new brand. They’re not going to say, ‘Oh, just because you’re on TV we want to buy a million dollars of merchandise.’ One of the biggest challenges is convincing retailers [Young & Reckless] is here to stay.”

However, was as much energy and concentration as Pfaff is directing towards his clothing line, music still ranks as his true love. It’s clearly evident whenever the topic is brought up. As an up and coming producer who has worked with artists such as Snoop and Game, Drama credits Pharrell, Kanye, Jermaine Dupri, Diddy, and Polow The Don as idols for their uncanny abilities to craft powerful records.

“Mentorship, I don’t really have that. I’ve been in the studio with Pharrell a bunch of times, but he’s too a little busy to worry about what I or any other kid is doing. I more so just watch what he does and take that home with me. I’m just trying to carve out my own niche because I feel I can make a big impact in this game right now. I’d rather Pharrell come back to me and congratulate me for my work as opposed to me going to him for help,” said Drama.

As an artist who focuses on the instrumentation of songs, Drama admittedly acknowledges he doesn’t listen to lyrics for roughly the first 10 times he hears a project. It’s a quality which can be found in most producers and something he has not problem expressing.

“It’s been plenty of times where I’ll listen to a song and say it’s dope, but my friend will be like ‘Did you hear what he just said? That was retarded.’ As random as it is, what’s inspiring me on a personal level is definitely Timbaland’s new album. But really, the One Republic album shocked me. I just bought the album because I was bored, but it turned out amazing.”

Regardless of his stature as a MTV reality star or his clothing line, proving himself in the music industry is only accomplished one way, by releasing quality product(s). Pfaff knows this and is planning for his introduction with his “Young & Reckless” mixtape in early 2010. Drawing inspiration from The Neptunes Presents…Clones, the release will feature artists including Snoop, Wale, Pac Div, The Cool Kids, Clipse and more over his production. Similar to his fashion endeavor, Drama acknowledges there is no time like the present if he hopes to be taken seriously.

“I just really want to give all my fans music to listen to because I’ve been talking about being a music producer for three years now. That and I want to show people in this game that I’m actually doing this for real. I know a lot of people think ‘Oh, he’s just doing this on TV.’ I want them to know this is what I actually do.”

    I would love to win for many reasons. My first one would be because I haven’t one anything in my life. lol xD and I thought it would be cool if I entered to have a chance to win. I really love Drama in the show “Fantasy Factory” he always gets picked on by Rob. lol. And he seems like a pretty chill guy to hang with. But I like mostly how he is really creative with his music.     I watched every Rob and Big episode, and Fantasy Factory.
    I have Dirty Girls part 1 and 2.
    Ordered the turqoise shirt “drama beats” and im currently wearing it.
    I had an invite to Fantasy Factory for the monster party, but at the time i was not
    21 yet :( . So gimmie this cause im obsessed!
    Now im gunna throw a little pitty out there, gunna make it short.

    Well i have alot of reasonable reasons. I mean i’m not tring to kiss up but your beats are pretty ill. haha better than that dj hero trash mixes. Because when i watch Fantasy Factory and re-runs of Rob & Big i always think to myself ” man why do they do that to that innocent, chill dude?” lmao it is kind of funny how Rob acts.     I think that kid drama is freaking hilarious! Like, thats what got me into watching rob & big, this really funny totally awkward kid that they made do all the funny stuff. And thats why i watch like every episode of fantasy factory when its on. I’ve actually already nought a young & reckless shirt at the pacsun in my cities mall but yeah anyways i could always use more!     I believe I should win because I am someone who really needs a small break. I am 17 and trying to finish high school while attending community college at the same time. I am taking Music Production and hope to one day change the radio and contract alot of undiscovered talent. I haven’t seen anyone that has put so much effort in what he does. Like seriously.     fantasy factory an rob & big since it started were not going to be able to watch it anymore she got cancer in 2007 an it was fine but now her cancer has speared all over her stomach an she will not be able to watch the shows with me :( . we also have just found out that we are going bankrupt an can not afford much of anything anymore it would be realy nice to actually win something for once thank you for your time-fan

    Drama has my dream life. No offense intended, but he basically became great by doing nothing. That is the real American Dream. To be able to start something from nothing. His line is all about that life he lives as well. I hope to one day start a street wear clothing line, and I plan to look at all the ways he started and continues to improve Young & Reckless. For now i’m stuck with working at PacSun and buying Y&R shirts with my discounts, but in the future, I plan on becoming something big.     Hello my name is Julie. I think I should win because I love Chris’s work with Young & Reckless and his music. I have every song of his on my iPod, and I would appreciate more than anything to have this 50$ item give away. I’m always updated on Drama I constantly check up on his blogs and status’s and on his young & reckless website. A common question I hear on Fantasy Factory is “what is your fantasy?” Well my fantasy is to meet Drama, and jump into the foam pit with him honestly. I actually have pride unlike some girls who like him for his looks, and I’m constantly talking about how bad I just want to meet this man. I look up to him more than anyone in my life. Everyday I check the sites for new videos, updates, new clothes, new contests, or anything to win something like this, or to meet him. If I won this contest, I would probably share my earnings with my cousin, and I would be almost the happiest girl. I love Young & Reckless, and I have yet to get something from it.     Wow, just incredible. I never knew the Drama i saw on tv when i was little would become such a big star. I remember when I was like 9 years old when I first saw rob and big. The minute I saw dramas face I just started laughing (in a good way). Drama was always the person I looked forward to seeing in every episode, because his prescence just made me want to watch more. Anyways, I believe I should win this 50$ giveaway because I am a true fan of drama. He has inspired me to skate and continue my musical passion as I get older. He has proved to me that with hard work, anyone can make it big one day, if they put there minds to it.     I feel I should win this contest because simply it would make me happy. I have been going through a tough time in my life. I am depressed and suffer from the horrible habit of cutting. I don’t have health insurance to be able to go out and seek professional help. Winning something like this would just improve my attitude. I also could use some new clothes because I can’t afford to buy any and I don’t have anyone that does that for me.     I’m not going to write a comment saying I should win because I love him or what not. Drama is an idol of mine, and my appreciation for music has grown after listening to music he has produced. He has allowed me to grow more creative in every aspect from my skating to my overall style as a person. I never really had an interest in street wear but after viewing young &reckless I became a fan of multiple different ones as well. When talking to Drama on twitter (mines @eastcoastskatr ) , its easy to recognize that he is humble and has drive. My goal is to become a successful entreperneur and give back to everyone who has supported me, especially skating. I believe with my heart and ambition I can follow the future I wan’t, but that mirrors drama in a way because he is doing his own thing. We both fight the haters and stay positive, because if ur confident everything will work out then it will. Going out there and giving everything 100% everyday, b/c thats the way to do it.     I think I should win simply because I support everything Drama does. I can honestly say that I’m one of his biggest fans, sure a lot of people say that but I check out the Young and Reckless site everyday, check for updates on his mixtape. I also tell all my friends who sick young and Reckless is, and it would be a ton easier if I had product to show them, sure I could show them the pictures on the site but if I had some of the shirts I could show how good of quality they are. Now I could always buy some of the shirts but I’m kinda broke right now but whether I win this contest or not I’m still gonna buy some shirts and some hats too.     I think I should win because it is impossible to find Young and Reckless stuff in Canada! I’ve been a huge fan of Drama since he was the awkward sidekick Rob and Big used to pick on. I admire his goals and dreams and how hard he has worked to achieve them. I think he’s definatly inspirational and I’d love to support him by showing off some awesome swag!     I think that i should win because first off, i love drama! and ive seen alot of clothes from his young and reckless line that i really like! Infact i wake up in the morning wishing i had some sweet ass young and reckless shirts to wear that day.     I would love to win this contest because I look up to Drama. He has inspired me to write many of the songs I have written and complete many of the things I have done in the past year. I wouldn’t use the prize just for myself I donate majority of the prize to local charities in FL. Also, I can totally relate to Drama, some of my family think its funny to prank me the youngest at every family event and such. Like Drama I have been pushed in a pool and I have witnessed people do stupid things like what Big Black did.

    I think I should win because i promote the shit out of Y&R. I requested Y&R to be sold in 5 of the PacSuns in my area. So far only 3 have started carrying the brand. I think Young & Reckless is a good brand for kids of any style. I made these homemade Y&R decals and put them everywhere; signs, skateparks, and pretty much any random place you can think of. I have done the same with Rob’s brand, Rouge Status. I don’t really care if I win, I just want Drama to know there’s actually people that really like his brand.     I should win, because I’m absolutely in love with Young & Reckless, I spend all of my extra money on Drama’s shirts, and whenever I’m down, I watch Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, and Drama cheers me up:)

    And, Everytime I go to PacSun, I tidy up the Young & Reckless shelf, because it’s always messy:) I’m watching Drama’s back, because apparently people aren’t aware that Young & Reckless is the absolute best clothing line ever made:) Its good quality clothing, and its cute too!

    I should win because I love Drama! I loved watching him ‘grow up’ in a sense on Rob & Big, and see how he’s changed and evolved on Fantasy Factory. I follow him on a lot of social media networks, so I’m up-to-date with his current endevors. I love that he is dabbling in tv, clothing, and producing. I love his style, I am a girl so I obviously love clothes, and I like to think of myself as open-minded to music, so I can appreciate a bunch of different types, including what Drama has to offer. I think Drama is awesome and definitely an up-and-coming sensation, because he is so ambitious and has so many aspirations that he’s actually making come true. I think Chris was in Rob’s shadow a lot in the past, but it is becoming Drama’s time to shine. I should win the contest because I can see, admire, and encourage that happening! Love you Drama :)

    I think I should win because I really can relate to the message that Chris is sending out to the world. More people should get to hear and share his message (that is to take more chanses and risks and yeah… just live!) I think that Chris seems like a great guy, and he has really inspired me with his successfully work. He made me keep believing in my own hopes and dreams, and not to give up. If he can get there, I can get there too.
    Though his clothingline looks very good, it’s also sending the message that I now live with, every day. It would be cool to get to wear clothes that are expressing just the things I want to. Also, I’ve got to say that ever since I knew about his passion for music, I’ve had faith in him. One day I looked him up on the Internet, finding him having a own clothingline and some killing songs.     I should win because I can easily relate to Drama Beats, except the family background haha. My dream is to become a recording engineer and make music, whether it be rap or rock or whatever, I want to be making music. I plan on attending Full Sail University when I’m done with High School (I’m currently a Junior) to get at least a Bachelors in Record Engineering. I’m active in as many musical activities as possible at school to sharpen my skills as a musician, since, you can’t really make music unless you know what music is. I play bass guitar, guitar, and baritone in the Bands and Jazz Band at the school I go to now, and I’ve been in 3 different local drum-lines before I moved over the summer. I’d love the $50 gift card because it’d allow me to finally get some new clothes without having to spend money I could be saving for a new instrument of some sort, or a recording kit for my PC. And that’s why I think I should win.

    I think I should win because my whole life I have been wanting to help people in any way I could possibly help them. I have wanted to donate money to the poor but I can’t afford to help them as much as I want to because money is tight around here and I need to somehow survive and make it through college myself and the other expenses that come along with living at school. However, if I win, I would most definately not keep the prizes, but rather give them to someone who has nothing to wear, since I already have a Y&R shirt. I can’t help people from what I personally have, because like I said, we around here need what we have ourselves. It has crushed me that I need to make it in life myself and therefore can’t give all I want. My dream is to one day have my name known for helping others. I followed him and rob on “rob and big” and now on fantasy factory. Im a huge fan, i watch all his Ustream broadcast that he does. I own 4 of his shirts along with a hat.     so i guess i should start by saying “I should win because” but ill start by saying Drama ur the realest dude on tv simply because you know who you are, you know your goals and you dont feel you have to be like Rob or anyone else you just do ur own thing and that is what being Young and Reckless is about. I could tell you were about to do big things when I first started watching Rob and big. I just didnt know when but then when the Hands of God studio was built I knew you were it was your time. Basically Drama what you do from the Producing/Beat making to the clothing line to living in LA is a dream of mine that prolly wont ever happen . Except for maybe the LA part but thats ok because I know only certain people are right for what you do. and hey maybe someday I will make some beats just for the hell of it. other than that I have to say I do promote Y&R anytime i get the chance but the good thing is that the gear basically promotes its self. The originality of the tees make them easy for people to just start a conversation that almost always leads to me saying yeah you can get it at pac sun or youngandreckless.com. I think your one of the first clothing designers to name give their line a relateable and original name that fits both the fans and the designer equally. so i guess this is now the time for me to say I should win because I Legitimately rep what you do and I think I could spread the good word of YOUNG and RECKLESS and Drama the next great producer.     I am young, and I am reckless.
    This statement alone proves that Drama and I have a lot in common, but after learning more about his life in the above article, I realized that we may have more in common than I thought. Skateboarding and composing music are among my favorite hobbies, and being the youngest of my family, I constantly find myself the victim of countless pranks and shenanigans. More importantly, however, I set high goals for myself and am not afraid to take risks in order to achieve them. For this reason, I consider Drama as a role model, aspiring to display similar dedication, ambition, and perseverance in my everyday life. I constantly look forward to new tracks, updates to his Twitter, and episodes of Rob & Big and Fantasy Factory. I have to travel hours either into New York or upper state Connecticut to find a Pac Sun that carries the line, and when they do they have three shirts to choose from. I’m a fan of the line and Drama I wish the line will become as big as Famous Stars & Straps. When I do go to malls closer to where I live I ask about the line and if they will carry it. I’ll tell the employees about the line and just go to the website, I also tell my friends about the line and all Drama’s projects. I support the line that I have made my own Y&R cell phone case and wallet, my ring tone is Young & Reckless by Bishop Lamont, Ya Boy, and Jah Free produced by Drama.

    Freaking Christopher Drama Pfaff, you are too cool for life. (: I kinda relate to him cause my cousins pick on me a lot, and I can’t complain cause then I’d just be a retard. And, plus, I love my cousins for buying my the I <3 Drama shirt! (: But it's my only Y&R shirt…so I want more. Can't wait for new clothes for girls! :) Love ya drama! :)

    I think I should win because I’ve been supporting Drama 100% here in Canada. I’ve already got a bunch of Y&R clothing and would love to have a reason to pick up even more. I’ll definitely be one of the first to pick up the mix tape as soon as it drops.

    I’ve been following Drama since the first episode of Rob & Big. I’ve seen every episode of both Rob&Big, and Fantasy Factory at least 3 if not more time. I check youngandreckless.com every day. I got a sweet young & reckless sweatshirt for christmas. I have the stickers all over my car, and all the kids at school want some. I do music. I’ve been waiting and waiting for the mixtape to be released. All I want to do is to do some music with the insane producer. Pick me man, cuz I’m your protege.

    It’d be great if I could win for one reason…To further promote Drama’s clothing line. Where I go to college in Oklahoma not too many of my peers know about the brand, but it’s something many of them would really like. I love the clothing line, but due to the expenses of college and college life I don’t get to order as much as I’d like to. It’d be awesome to have some more stuff to promote the line around this area.

    I want to win so badly, it’s ridiculous. Not only have I watched both Rob n Big and the Fantasy Factory, but I have wanted to be involved in music my whole life. I play five instruments, I have an album on iTunes, and I am planning to post a new mix tape with some kids that rap from my school up there as well. I’ve always wanted to learn more skills in the production element of music, like mixing and mastering and making different beats, I just haven’t had that much time because my main focus is theory. I obviously have the musica integrity, but not the right tools. Drama makes these sick beats that I can picture myself making one day, and hopefully his inspiration will lead to my career. Aside from the music element, I think that Young and Reckless is sick, although there isn’t much of it on the East Coast, which I hope will change. I can’t stress enough how much of an idol Drama is for me, and how lucky he is to be related to Rob so that his dreams can come true. Drama is and always will be an inspiration to me.

    Hi, I really love your clothing line and so far I have 2 shirts. I really do admire you especially since you started at the bottom and rose to the top even if ur cousin did help u a bit.     I would love to win so that I could give it to my 12 year old son who turns 13 this month. He deserves to win because he is awesome, hilarious, and loves music and DRAMA BEATS! He would absolutely appreciate the chance to probably be the first to wear the brand at school. He wears a lot of DC and I was just looking into getting him a couple Y&R things for his brithday.     Drama..you are awsome. me and my boys at school are trying to get your stuff spread around. I rep your line at least twice a week…even more considiring i wear a young and reckless jacket. I would LOVE to win the $50 give away. You are awsome and getting bigger by the day. Like you tell everyone after your vids “Stay young and stay reckless” I maintain that lifestyle everyday.
