Catalog Catch Up: Freddie Gibbs – "Queen"

Chances are you first heard of Freddie Gibbs shortly after his now critically acclaimed mixtape, Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik. And that’s fine. It doesn’t matter when you became appreciative of his music. Either way you know Gangsta Gibbs is one of the most promising “rookies” in Hip-Hop equip with a flow and story that’s stupid. The good kind.

Before Midwest… was inhaled, there was The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs. What it may lack in public presence, the Gary, Indiana, native more than made up for it with crazy stories of street life and wordplay that’s still almost impossible to mimic to this day. One of those narratives is “Queen.” I lie to you not, the first time I heard this track, I hit the repeat button a good five or six times. Likely with chronic and Henny flowing through his system, Freddie painted a story that was so vivid if you close your eyes, you’d swear you were right there for the whole thing. It’s a crazy ass story of love, deceit and murder, all backed by the shady nature of a female Gibbs placed his trust in. All the makings of a (hood) Lifetime movie slapped with a parental advisory sticker.

See what I’m sayin’? And the story only gets crazier from there. This’ll definitely be one of those tracks I revisit from time to time regardless of how big of a star Gibbs ultimately becomes. I’m the same way with Jay-Z and “You Must Love Me” or Nas and “Drunk By Myself.” So if you’re a stickler for catalogs or a lover of good music, don’t hesitate to add this.
