As the support for Trayvon Martin continues to pour out, and the backlash against George Zimmerman, Martin’s shooter, becomes more and more audible, the New Black Panther Party is stirring up a bit of controversy.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, members of the New Black Panther party are prepared to offer a $10,000 reward for the “capture” of Zimmerman, who has not yet been arrested and is still roaming Florida as a free man. Mikhail Muhammad, the party’s leader, made the announcement at a protest Saturday in Sanford, FL., where Martin was gunned down.
“If the government won’t do the job, we’ll do it,” Muhammad said, leading his group of eight party members in chants like “freedom or death” and “justice for Trayvon” while making the iconic gesture of raising their fists into the air.
As would be expected, city officials are urging citizens not to take matters into their own hands.
“The City is requesting calm heads and no vigilante justice,” the statement said. “Attempts by civilians to take any person into custody may result in criminal charges or unnecessary violence.”
All I can say is that I hope the Florida police, be it on the local or state level, take control of this situation before it gets out of hand. Each day Zimmerman remains out of custody is another day for the seeds of unrest to grow, and those seeds are growing at an extremely fast pace.
