Remember back in, like say, 2004 or 2005 there was a running sentiment that West Coast Hip-Hop was on its last gasp of air from a national relevance standpoint. Game’s The Documentary was an IV the Coast needed, lamenting itself California (and rap) classic in the process. Still, there was young blood needed to continue what Jayceon started. Fast forward nearly a decade and the West is back. With names like Dom Kennedy, Nipsey Hussle, Odd Future, DaVinci and, of course, the entire TDE, Cali’s resurgence has been one of the better stories of the past few years. And, it may soon be time to add another name to the mantle. Meet Fexx.
I was just put on to buddy this past week through his aptly titled “Respect” video. The song won me over in the opening seconds off the sample alone, but was even more surprised upon finding out Fexx wasn’t shabby with the wordplay either.
And kudos to actually releasing a video with a plot, instead of the normal status quo for visuals these days including bottles, women and bank rolls likely only loaned for the video only. The lyrics combined with the instrumentation combined with the screenwriting make it not only an easy listen, but an intriguing watch as well.
Oh, and when that’s done, there’s more. Check his Revolver EP. I’m not saying the West has another one just yet, but first impressions are everything. And I’m willing to hear more.
