Catalog Catch Up: Drake – “Where To Now”

Comeback Season doesn’t get enough credit in the grand scheme of Drake’s ever-evolving career. In the interesting “middle juncture” of Drizzy’s uprising – this was a year and some change before the YMCMB connection came fruition – the tape showcases some of his finest moments as a MC. Case in point, the painfully short, but potent “Where To Now.”

I hate always posting lyrics around here, but these help illustrate the platform. Dream chasing and vision planning is addictive. Especially when there’s someone of the fairer sex involved.

“Liquor that’s over ice and denim that’s overpriced
And tryna’ make all my goals for the future come overnight
God-god-god-god damn how time soars
I’m tryna get that house in Toronto with pine floors
Come over watch a season of Flight of the Concords
And I try to put some lotion all over your contours
But uh, tell me you surfin’ let me know you on board
You can’t seal up the bottle once all of the Dom’s poured
Yes I swear to God girl I put it on Lord
I’m tryna show you life through the tint on these Tom Ford’s
Ethiopian girl Ethiopian girl
With yo’ long curly hair and yo’ big ass bootay
Reading all them pro black pro female books
Just let ‘em let ‘em know that you ain’t no groupie…”

Call it how you will. Drake’s a damn good rapper. He’s been one for well over five years now. And intriguing thing – for me at least – is that he appears to be getting better even with Grammys on the resume now. Like Aubrey in 2007, I’m still trying to make all my dreams of the future come overnight. More work to do, I guess.
