Billboard Breakdown – Jan. 12

2. Drake – Take Care – 42,000 - As one of the hot topics of the week, who knows how much of this is because of the Common “beef.” Either way, it hasn’t slowed down his attack on the Billboard charts.

4. Young Jeezy – TM103 – 36,000 - Like Drake, Jeezy’s been a hot topic this week based off another high profile release. Young’s still leaving his imprint on the charts though. **taps feet for “Supafreak” video**

6. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 27,000 - Did you know Rih-Rih became the highest selling digital artist ever? Well, now you do.

17. Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV – 17,000 - For as much as I hear “She Will” on the radio, it’s almost crazy to think they never shot a video.Wayne’ll be double platinum in a few weeks, by the way.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Jan. 4

1. Adele – 21 – 144,185 - I’d say wow, but I’m not surprised. If any album has a chance to go diamond, it’s this one.

2. Drake – Take Care – 71,633 - Drake’s a wild boy for getting Aaliyah’s face tatted on his back. Even still, his sophomore cut continues to dominate the charts and I’m not even sure what the next single is. Kudos to him.

3. Young Jeezy – TM103 – 67,169 - Young’s doing just fine on the charts. I know, at some point, the song with Ne-Yo will be used as a single, but I’m secretly hoping a video for “Supafreak” is released. Of the NSFW variety, of course.

9. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 42,093 - What do ya know? She’s gold now. And yes, “We Found Love” was one of the better singles of 2011. **draws line in sand** That’s right, I said it.

15. Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne – 26,673 - Last year, Jay said we could expect a solo album from him and Kanye and possibly another WTT project. They’ve got just over 360 days to make that happen.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Dec. 28

3. Young Jeezy – TM103: Hustlerz Ambition – 233,000 - Given all the jokes and doubt he’s had to endure for damn near the past two years, salute to Jeezy for putting up first week #’s like this. “Supafreak” deserves a top notch NSFW video pronto.

5. Drake – Take Care – 131,000 - Aaliyah tattoo and all, Drizzy’s still selling like mad.

7. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 99,000 - And just like that, she’ll be 500K down next week. Consistency kills.

17. Common – The Dreamer, The Believer  - 69,000 - I expected this to sell more, especially given the seemingly millions of people who claim to be fans of Com. Regardless, it’s still a pretty good number given the fact he doesn’t have the strongest TV/radio support in the world.

22. Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV – 56,000 - Guess who’s knocking on the door of double platinum? For what it’s worth, “Blunt Blowin’” and “Megaman” were quality records.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Dec. 21

7. Drake – Take Care – 77,000 - Here’s news that was actually news earlier this week. Drake’s platinum. Completely off topic though, I’d like to see him drop a “9 A.M. In Dallas” type track to address all the hoopla that’s going on now.

9. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 54,000 - Like I’ve said before, she’ll just keep her sales consistent. She should be gold at some point in January.

23. Mary J. Blige – My Life II: The Journey Continues – 39,000 - That “Mr. Wrong” track is picking up steam. At the right time, too. Trust me, they’ll be some group of single females singing that song as the ball drops in a few weeks.

26. Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa – Mac & Devin Go To High School – 38,000 - I didn’t expect this to break the charts mainly because the promotion for this wasn’t exactly intense. That being said, this album isn’t bad. Check it out since you’re about to have a long weekend coming up.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – December 14

3. Adele – 21 – 187,379 - You know what time it is. Nothing to see here other than the fact she officially surpassed the 5x platinum mark this week. And in roughly another five or six, she’ll be saying hello to 6x. Just in time for the Grammys.

4. Justin Bieber – Under The Mistletoe – 158,182 - The crazy thing is that this appears to be just a set up type album for his next studio project set to drop next year. And it’ll be platinum before the ball drops in NYC in about two and a half weeks.

5. Amy Winehouse – The Lioness: Hidden Treasures – 113,856 - That number isn’t anything to be ashamed about in the least bit, but I can’t help but shake the feeling it’d be higher.

7. Drake – Take Care – 73,154 - This’ll be platinum just in time for Christmas.

17. The Roots – Undun – 48,189 - To be quite honest, I don’t ever see a point, in the near future at least, that involves rap music without this iconic group. They’ve got their own following and pending this gets to 100K (which it will), that’s a win. Their one of those groups that don’t need to sell a crazy amount of records to remain relevant. At least that’s how I view their career from this armchair A&R’s eyes.   (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – December 7

2. Adele – 21 – 143,597 - Just get used to seeing her name on this post. I say this every week, but what she is doing is nothing short of amazing. And she’ll be five times platinum next week. I hope she’s bringing a suitcase to the Grammys because that’s the only way she’s carrying all of her awards out at once.

3. Justin Bieber – Under The Mistletoe – 133,467 - Bieber’s slow but steady inclusion into “urban music” continues and there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping him. The youngster’s Christmas album appears to be selling like mad and should be platinum sometime in the near future. Maybe even before 2012.

4. Drake – Take Care – 90,175 - Add Aubrey to that list of artist who’ll be platinum before the year is up. And I’m hearing more and more steam for the album’s titled track to be pushed as a single. That’s fine and it’ll probably serve as a #1 smash too. Here’s to hoping a video for “Underground Kingz” surfaces as well.

6. Mary J. Blige – My Life II: The Journey Continues – 71,935 - The fact Mary’s been doing this for three decades now and she’ll still an in demand artist proves she is one of the GOAT’s.

7. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 68,183 -  I knew I was tripping when I said “We Found Love” was a hot record. Even Cam’ron agrees with me.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Nov. 30

3. Rihanna – Talk That Talk – 198,000 - I had a conversation with someone the other about Rihanna’s sales and how they were disappointing. Well, to be honest, they’re not. She’s one of those artists who can sell consistently. And truthfully, she’s probably got seven or eight singles on that album which will push her to platinum.

4. Drake – Take Care – 173,000 - Platinum by Christmas, like I said. And I’m almost positive the title track with Rihanna will be a single. I heard it on the radio in DC last weekend. Sidenote: “Only fat n*gga in the sauna with Jews” is such a great line and I’m not even sure why.

5. Mary J. Blige – My Life II: The Journey Continues – 156,000 – Not a bad first week for The Queen. I’m pretty sure she’ll still be making music when my kids go to high school. And I haven’t had my first one yet.

27. Yelawolf – Radioactive – 41,000 - Go cop this. For real. Go cop it.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Nov. 23

1. Drake – Take Care – 631,000 - Considering Thank Me Later did roughly 447K first week, it is safe to say Aubrey has not hit the sophomore slump.

11. Childish Gambino – Camp – 52,000 - You know, in all actuality, this number may be more surprising than Drake’s. Then again, the guy is on TV, so it is not exactly like he is this unknown rapper running around attempting to win people over. Still, congrats to that man on putting up these numbers.

17. Webbie – Savage Life 3 – 30,000 - You damn right I purchased a copy. “Mo Ass” is my SH*T!

24. Mac Miller – Blue Slide Park – 25,000 - If Mac gets to 300K, which it is looking like he will do, that W he took last week will look even bigger. He’s got a few choices for singles to run with here, too.  (Keep reading…)

Billboard Breakdown – Nov. 16

1. Mac Miller – Blue Slide Park – 144,000 - What more needs to be said that already hasn’t? Clap for that man whether you’re a fan of his music or not.

15. Wale – Ambition – 41,000 - So Wale’s over the 200K sold mark and he just released the “Tats On My Arm” video. I sure wouldn’t have minded if that song made the album.

22. Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV – 25,000 - Will there ever be a video for “She Will”?

32. J. Cole – Cole World: The Sideline Story – 17,000 - Cole’s loving life across the pond and is soon to have 400K records scanned. Not bad for a guy people on Twitter were saying made the worst decisions as an artist a few months ago. We all remember, that right?  (Keep reading…)

Mac Miller Debuts at #1 on Billboard Charts

Indie rapper Mac Miller’s first album, “Blue Slide Park,” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 144,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

While it didn’t shift as much as some industry sources had expected ( 180,000 was the projection), he still can lay claim to a pretty cool chart feat: “Blue Slide Park” is the first independently distributed debut album by an act to hit No. 1 since 1995.

The last (and only previous one) was Tha Dogg Pound’s ”Dogg Food.” It started in the penthouse on the Nov. 18, 1995, chart with 278,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Dogg” was released on Death Row/Interscope, but independently distributed via Priority. “Blue Slide” is a Rostrum Records release, distributed by INgrooves via Fontana Distribution (Universal Music Group Distribution’s indie arm).

“Blue Slide” is the second indie-distributed No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this year, following Cake’s ”Showroom of Compassion.” The latter arrived atop the tally on the Jan. 29 list. Last year, we saw three indie leaders: Vampire Weekend’s ”Contra,” the charity compilation “Hope for Haiti Now” and Arcade Fire’s ”The Suburbs.”

Behind Miller is a surging Michael Buble, whose “Christmas” album rises 8-2 with 123,000 and a 38% sales gain. It’s a new peak for the set, which started at No. 3 two weeks ago. While it’s unlikely Buble will hit No. 1 next week (as Drake’s ”Take Care” should arrive atop the list), expect “Christmas” to perform strongly through the holiday season.

The new “Now 40″ hits compilation bows at No. 3 this week with 119,000 while the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1″ soundtrack enters at No. 4 with 105,000. The latter should see a gain next week, following the movie’s premiere in theaters on Nov. 18.
