Drake’s Star Studded Homecoming

Speaking of Drake, at least for one night, Toronto was the epicenter of the Hip-Hop universe. Drake’s T-Dot homecoming yesterday was dubbed as the OVOFest – a concert that was weeks in the making and took only a few hours to become legendary. For a man who has been around the world and back since his rise to superstardom last year, it seems as if this show meant the most to him out of any performance. Back in front of his home crowd, the loyal fans were treated to several acts including Francis and The Lights, P. Reign, Bun B and Young Jeezy. And this was all before Drake was even spotted on stage.

Given close to two hours of stage time, the OVO frontman made sure he didn’t disappoint with more special guests than people in attendance could count. Judging from Niko’s tweet before hand, I sarcastically thought he was going to bring Barack out, thus changing the scope of music, entertainment and politics forever. Barack didn’t happen, but everyone else did. (Keep reading…)

Chad Ochocinco & Terrell Owens Guest Coach at Rucker Park

The Entertainer’s Basketball Classic (EBC) — the most recognizable streetball tournament in the world — taped NFL stars Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens (T.O.) as celebrity guest coaches yesterdat at Harlem’s renowned Rucker Park.  Sprite, Nike BasketballVH1 and Power Balance have come on board to support the EBC as title sponsors for this year’s tournament.

The EBC, well known for bringing in the hottest celebrities during its summer streetball tournament, continues to live up to its reputation by bringing in two of NFL’s biggest names — Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens — who took off their cleats and go toe-to-toe on the court as celebrity guest coaches during its Monday night streetball game.  Both athletes star in their own VH1 reality shows, “Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch” and “The T.O. Show Season 2” both premiering on Sunday, July 11th at 9 PM ET/PT and 10:30 PM ET/PT, respectively. Donating their time and names to guest coach the tournament is the ultimate gift of giving back to their fans and the community and mirrors the community service efforts of the EBC and its overall mission of community support.

Drake Protesting BP Oil Spill

Drake joined the Hip-Hop Caucus at Washington DC’s 9:30 Club for a rally to end offshore drilling this past sunday. The event is part of the Caucus’ “Green The Block” initiative, which began last year.

In a statement, Drake said, “Every where you turn, pollution and poverty are hurting our communities. We can change that. Going green is the solution. I’m green on my tour, I am greenin’ block and you can too. It’s easier than you think.”

A great deal of controversy regarding offshore drilling has escalated after a British Petroleum oil spill, Deepwater Horizon, in the Gulf of Mexico in April. That spill is ongoing, and presently ranks to be the fourth largest oil spill in history.

Drake’s full-length debut, Thank Me Later, will hit record shelves this Tuesday, June 15th.

Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg & A Tribe Called Quest Confirmed For RTB

What started as a believable rumor is now a reality. This summer, in various cities, the “Rock The Bells” tour will feature some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop history. Better yet, they’ll be performing some of their greatest albums – in their entirety. Pack lunch and plenty of water and prepare yourself for classic music for hours on end.

Snoop Dogg will be performing his debut Doggystyle along with A Tribe Called Quest running through the timeless Midnight Mauraders. If this doesn’t make you want to go get a ticket, expect to see DJ Premier performing a full set tribute to the late Guru. Wu-Tang will also be performing 36 Chambers. And with the “very” special guest Lauryn Hill, having other acts like KRS-One, Wiz Khalifa, Slick Rick, Murs & 9th Wonder, Clipse, Big Sean, Yelawolf and countless others, this looks to be one of the “must attend” events of the summer.

Swizz Beatz Visits & Adopts a Charter School

Yesterday Swizz Beatz, famed music producer and hip-hop recording artist, toured a chartered school in the Bronx that he just adopted. The producer/rapper addressed the school students stressing to them the importance of education and verbalized his commitment to support their art programs. Many might not know that Swizz is an avid fan of the arts and recently said on his twitter that he will donate a portion of his up-coming album sales to arts and music programs in schools. “I love art. I love all kinds of paintings. The beautiful thing about art is; no one can ever be right or wrong. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. It’s your own interpretation of the art you are looking at which makes it great or timeless.

The Title Stays In Harlem

Let it be known Elliott Wilson reminded me of this yesterday, so I can’t take full credit for the title. It was a hot mixtape though.

The internet was buzzing yesterday with Cam and Jimmy’s first public appearance together in a few years. It should go without saying how big of a moment this was. Miss Info even gave a play-by-play of the entire event and Twitter was buzzing at the sight. So if the reunion was “too late,” it sure as hell didn’t seem like it.

Who knows if we will ever see another official release from the faction formerly known as Dipset, but you have to start somewhere. The other important event of the day was Jimmy’s squad winning the Converse Band of Brothers basketball tournament. Pretty much, just imagine the Rucker being transplanted to Atlanta. Somewhat. From what people told me it was your usual hood basketball game with more fouls than points and every player attempting to channel their inner LeBron or Dwayne Wade.

Jimmy’s team (including Cam suiting up) beat Shawty Lo/Pill/OJ the Juiceman’s squad by a score of 10-5. But let’s get back to this Cam/Jimmy mending of their friendship. This is good. And since we’re speaking about basketball, take a look at this line up: (Keep reading…)

Revlon Run/Walk For Women

The 13th Annual Entertainment Industry Foundation Revlon Run/Walk For Women at Times Square kick off this morning. The event centered around cancer and the need to create even more awareness which takes the lives of far too many each year.

On the surface, supporting any foundation attempting to fight cancer sounds good. This was definitely a motivational and inspirational event. There were women there who were battling cancer, survived cancer and the family and friends of those who have lost their lives to the disease. Notable names included Dr. Oz, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Lilly Tartikoff, Jesse Martin, Trey Songz and Halle Berry were in attendance.

Halle kicked the event off energizing the crowd with reminders for why everyone was brought together in the first place. Much to the enjoyment of many of the ladies in attendance, Songz graced the stage to perform. Considering the tone of the event, Trey kept it respectful and performed Sam Cooke’s timeless anthem, “Change Gon’ Come.” He hinted on Twitter that his voice was not up to par, but that did not seem to bother those in attendance. It was a respectful rendition to a classic and a great way to kick off the festivities for the afternoon.
