The Life & Times Of Trick Daddy

Long before LeBron/Wade/Bosh, long before Rick Ross and Trina, long before DJ Khaled, but after Luther Campbell, Trick Daddy made it his sole mission to embed Miami on the Hip-Hop map. Trick’s legacy is important, for lack of a better phrase. A lot of people don’t know he was one of 27 (yes, 27) children. His music has always been a reflection of his coming up and trials he experienced in the streets. He has never comprised his sound and he has never shied away from telling the entire country he was proud of being a thug. A thug who never second guessed himself when speaking on ills not only in his own city, but the world as a whole. From Slip-N-Slide to Dunk Ryders to several hit records in between, the entire story will officially be told with the November 16 release of his autobiography, Magic City: Trials of a Native Son. T.I.’s Takers Earns $21 Million at the Box Office

T.I.'s "Takers" Earns $21 Million at the Box Office

UPDATE: Well, it seems that Takers ended up taking the top spot away from The Last Exorcism. EW says that after the final box-office numbers were released, T.I.’s caper flick earned $20.5 million over the weekend whereas Exorcism made $20.4 million. A slim victory, but a victory nonetheless.

Does T.I. have what it takes to become the next rapper to successfully move into the world of film? Based on the performance of his latest film Takers, he just might.

Takers, a heist thriller starring T.I., Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, and Zoë Saldaña, placed second in the weekend box-office race, earning an estimated $21 million over the three-day period. The film wasn’t expected do that much business, and lost the top spot to horror film The Last Exorcism by a razor-thin margin of $300,000. Make no mistake—Takers’s weekend performance is quite impressive.

What makes the success of Takers even more noteworthy, however, is that T.I. not only stars in the film but serves as one of its producers as well. It’s the first film project to come from his Grand Hustle Entertainment, which has secured a 3-picture deal with Sony. Read rest of story…

Jay-Z Teams Up With Yankees For New Merchandise

“Yeah I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can…”

Jay-Z isn’t sitting at the top spot of Forbes’ Hip Hop cash kings list for nothing. The mogul is always about his business and expanding the reach of his brand. In his latest venture, Hov has teamed up with his hometown team, the New York Yankees to produce co-branded merchandise (hats, tees, jackets, hoodies etc with Jay-Z and Yankee logos) which will be available in the New Yankee Stadium beginning next week.

The clothes were created in an effort to commemorate the first big concerts in the Bronx Bombers new home on September 13 and 14th when Jay and Eminem rock the last of two stops on their “Home and Home Tour.” The first two shows will take place in Slim Shady’s hometown, Detroit, at Comerica Park on September 3 & 4.

Timbaland Suicidal Over Stolen Watch?

Was Timbaland so distressed by the theft of a $2 million watch that he contemplated taking his own life? According to TMZ, that may have been the case.

Yesterday, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department launched a manhunt for Timbo after the super-producer’s family contacted them, believing he was distraught over the theft of an expensive Jacob & Co. watch.

Timbaland was on the phone earlier in the day with his brother-in-law … deeply upset about something. We’re told one of the things that was eating at him was a theft at his Malibu residence a day before. Someone had stolen a crazy expensive Jacob & Co. watch — valued at $2 million — and Timbaland suspected it might have been someone he trusted.

Timbaland left his home yesterday and began driving. Family members couldn’t locate him, became extremely worried and called the Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities eventually found Timbaland and returned him to his residence where paramedics determined that he was not a threat to himself. An investigation into the theft is currently underway.

T.I. Launching New Animated Series

The King of The South hasn’t missed a beat since returning from his government imposed hiatus. In the last few months he’s been everywhere promoting his movie Takers (which is in theaters this Friday,) working on his new album King Uncaged… and he even got married. He’s definitely proving that the situation won’t stop the hustle, and that he’s still the man to beat. The multi-faceted star is now adding another title to his resume: Cartoon Producer.

A few days ago Tip sat down with Sirius Shade 45’s Angela Yee and shared that he would be producing an animated series called “Lil Homies”, which would reprise his character from the movie ATL, and pick up where the film left off. He also said that he might lend his voice to the show, as a narrator, and even (jokingly) offered Angela Yee the opportunity to voice the part of the “neighborhood freak”. No word on when the show will be going into production, or a premiere date but I’m sure it will be a hit with all his fans.

DJ Khaled Signs With Cash Money

Miami is the home of free agents and marquee signings apparently. You’d have to be living under a rock to not know of the Miami Heat’s offseason acquisitions. DJ Khaled moments ago added his name to the summer’s marquee moves. To make a long story much, much shorter, Khaled was a free agent and looking to take his “winning” services elsewhere to for new beginnings.

He and Birdman met on a yacht earlier today and by the end of the meeting DJ Khaled was the newest member of YMCMB. Simple as that.

Chase N. Cashe – “Special” (prod. by Hit Boy)

One thing about the Surf Club is that they are always recording music. Producing or rapping or A&R’ing quality tapes, they’re a group of all trades. You can credit that to their own self-inspired work ethic in addition to the company they keep. In the case of Chase N. Cashe’s “Special,” it is an example of both. Blessed with a relaxing and inviting Hit Boy creation, Chase waxes poetics about his selection process to the women he invites in his life. Toting a black card and a pocket full of change, the platinum producer goes on to cement his presence on the song with an infectious hook.

Pending you follow Chase on Twitter, his penchant to spell things with -eaux paying homage to his New Orleans roots should come as no surprise. I haven’t actually confirmed it with the G, but there are rumors he plans on releasing a mixtape entitled Gumbeaux. That’s “gumbo” for those who were lost.
