Musicians and fans will now be privy to a whole new metric of success, thanks to Billboard, who is today launching the Social 50, a chart that measures an artist’s popularity based on social networking activity.
The Social 50 will rank artists using such metrics as weekly additions of friends, fans and followers (depending on the network), artist page views and weekly song plays. Rankings are also influenced by measuring the ratio of page views to fans.
Predictably, artists present on the debut chart are largely mainstream, the top 10 including Rihanna (who holds the number-one spot) and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,†YouTube darlings Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, and Twitter fave Nicki Minaj. Oft-parodied Ke$ha and social media-savvy Katy Perry also made the cut.
“We continue to adapt the way we chart the changing landscape of music,†says Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde. “The Social 50 is yet another step in the evolution of Billboard and an important response to our changing times.â€

Newly-announced Grammy nominee Cee-Lo Green visited ‘Chelsea Lately’ Wednesday night, and Chelsea told him about a former security guard for the show who impersonated his brother.
“I believed him, so then I took this photo with him,” she said. Scroll down for the photo, which shows Chelsea gagged and bent over a desk, pants down, as the guard prepares to swat her with a paddle.
“I like to let black men slap me on the ass when they come on the show,” she joked. “I thought I was being nice to him and it would maybe help me get you on the show.”
Cee-Lo set her straight. “That’s not my brother,” he said. “Never settle for second best.”
The ‘F*** You’ singer went on to say he doesn’t even have a brother, just a sister. He also talked about being a 35-year-old grandfather–his daughter, 20, appeared on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 a few years ago and has since had a son.

Justin Bieber has become the latest star to team up with superproducer Dr. Dre and release his own line of high-end headphones.
The teen pop sensation, 16, has launched Justbeats as part of the rap legend’s Beats By Dr. Dre collection, in association with electronics experts Monster. The range, which is designed in purple and grey, includes on-ear and in-ear headphones.
The Bieber-themed ‘phones are available in two styles: on-ear or in-ear. And of course their purple, which is Justin’s favorite color. The in-ears are selling at Best Buy for $120 while the on-ear is $200.
Bieber follows Lady Gaga and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in collaborating with Dre and Monster.
Lil’ Kim has been making headlines for everything but original music, but that’s all about to change heading into 2011. The Queen Bee is apparently hitting the studio to record a follow-up to her 1996 debut album ‘Hard Core.‘ Entitled ‘Hard Core 2: All Hail the Queen,’ Kim is seeking production from The Neptunes, The-Dream, Will.i.am, Polow Da Don and more for the new record.
Kim, of course, has made her recent rounds in a public battle with the newly-crowned “queen of hip-hop” Nicki Minaj. Her recent diss track ‘Black Friday‘ took aim at the Young Money pop star, yet ‘Hard Core 2′ should be a more adequate test on Kim’s current standing in the rap world.
