Three things you don’t do:

1) Spit into the wind

2) Tug on Superman’s cape

3) Give a bad review to a Kanye West-related project

As we all know by now, Mr. West has been stopping in various cities around the world showcasing his Runaway film. For the most part, it’s received positive reviews based on the originality, concept and the music which guides the piece. That was, however, until Chris Lee of the L.A. Times critquied the film.

And as you can see, the end result was our first official Kanye Twitter rant.

While certain songs by Virginia-based rap act Clipse are interpreted as storied, romanticized ruminations on the lives of street hustlas and drug dealers, that isn’t necessarily their intent. MC and lyricist Malice has released a number of web videos over the past year, encouraging those around him to look beyond the hype and think for themselves. Like the group’s songs, these short videos — featuring acting by Malice and his entourage — show the downside of often-celebrated stereotypes, reminding us that thug life isn’t something to which we should actually aspire.

Malice’s forthcoming memoir, Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked, is an extension of that idea. In Excerpt #2, Malice offers a live-action recitation of a section of the book, recounting a time when he was living so far beyond his means that he was paid a visit by the repo man. It’s a lesson in the indulgence and consequence that can accompany an influx of cash with no corresponding sense of responsibility.

#TeamEarly

Prior to last weekend, I hadn’t been to Philly in close to a decade. Credit it to my own ignorance, but I expected every dude in North Philly to look like Freeway. I was right about 40% of the time, too. Regardless, one thing  I wasn’t oblivious too was the caliber of MC the Philly Freezer was/is/will be. My homie Liad had been telling me for a few days how Free was preparing to release a new video and song in preparation of a new project he was gearing to drop. Naturally, I was intrigued, especially when I found out Jake One was behind the boards. Freeway x J.O. are one of the best combos in Hip-Hop I feel many people have yet to truly embrace.

Anyway, “Escalators” harbors a Biggie sample and a Jimmy Giambrone directorial vision. The record itself is dope, as expected. It’s perfect music to ride to and serve as an anthem as the temperature drops, while the same escalator to success continues to rise at the same speed. This Free and Jake collab add Diamond In The Ruff to an already lengthy list of projects worth checking out this fall/winter.

An interesting cover to say the least. Self-made millionaires – and good friends – 50 Cent and Soulja Boy appear on the November 2010 issue of XXL.

SB on about his connection to 50 Cent: “Being Black, with money, from the hood, struggles, and coming from nothing to something, of course you’re going to share the common struggles. You going to have people hate. You going to have people that change on you, and all that. So of course, watching 50, and him going through what he did—if there wasn’t no 50 Cent, there would be no Soulja Boy. You know what I mean?”

50, who has come to SB’s defense on numerous occasions and has taken on the role of mentor to the young Atlanta rapper, can relate. The on-again off-again industry outcast tellsXXL Deputy Editor, Rondell Conway, “I’m more comfortable in a space where people are doubting me than when I’m the favorite. They doubted me before. Obviously, I was the only crazy person that believed in me at one point.”
