Wyclef Jean to Run for President of Haiti

If he was president.

Many news outlets have reported that Wyclef Jean is indeed planning to run for president of Haiti.

“If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another ten years before doing this,” the former Fugees frontman told TIME Magazine. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another ten years for us to bring it into the 21st century.” Furthermore, Clef sees this as a natural progression from the creation of politically-minded music. “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.”

Live and direct from the island, Cita’s pride and joy made his latest phone call a local one. Earlier tonight, Lil’ Wayne called into Funk Flex’s show on Hot 97 for the first interview he has given since going away. The 10 minute phone call (that’s normally how long many last coming from a correctional facility) had Flex and Weezy address a variety of topics. One thing he did was make sure he informed fans that their words were not falling on his dear ears and they proved to be motivation each day he wakes up (which is around noon, by the way).

He also plugged his online diary – WeezyThanxYou.com – and even shouted out our own Karen Civil for her hard work behind the project.

Eminem, B.o.B. Nominated for MTV VMAs

Nominations for MTV’s 2010 Video Music Awards were announced today, and, unsurprisingly, Lady Gaga and Eminem led the pack.

Eminem received eight VMA nods, including Best Male Video and Video of the Year for “Not Afraid.” The Detroit lyricist remarked that the awards show would pose a major inconvenience in his touring schedule. “Apparently, MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs. F me, right?!?!” he told MTV.

B.o.B. is also up for a few Moonmen thanks to his five nominations, including Video of the Year and Best Collaboration for “Airplanes” featuring Hayley Williams.

The most nominations, however, went to Lady Gaga who earned a whopping 13 nominations, including two different videos in the Video of the Year”—”Bad Romance” and “Telephone,” her collabo with Beyoncé. That feat gives Gaga the distinction of being the first female artist nominated for two videos in that category.

Also garnering nominations were Jay-Z (“On To The Next One,” Best Hip-Hop Video), Drake (“Find Your Love,” Best Male Video), and Nicki Minaj (“Massive Attack,” Best New Artist). Check out the list of the 2010 MTV VMA nominees after the jump.

Today is a big day for Wale. His highly anticipated More About Nothing mixtape drops in a little less than two hours. More “importantly” than that, we have the latest edition of “Civilized Talk” which features the face of D.C. Hip-Hop. Recorded last week, the near three minute clip shows Mr. Folarin opens up about:

- Why he took a sabbatical from Twitter

- Why he decided to record another mixtape in the same vein as one that is considered his best recording

- His personal favorite from the tape

The tape drops at noon eastern time today, but in case you have not seen the covers and tracklisting, hit the jump.

As R&B’s current golden boy, Trey Songz has been having an amazing year. His last album Ready, released just under a year ago, spawned 6 singles, including “Say Aah”, which was his first to crack the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100. He’s toured with Jay-Z and Young Jeezy, picked up his own reality show on BET, and made cameo appearances in a couple of feature films…all while preparing material for a brand new album Passion, Pain & Pleasure.

“Can’t Be Friends” is the first official single from PP&P, which will be in stores on September 14th. Trey shot videos for both the previously released buzz single “Bottoms Up”, and “Can’t Be Friends”…so look for those in the coming weeks.

Reasons why you should download:

1) It’s Surf Club approved. That’s all we need around here.

2) It’s free. It’s new music. That should be enough convincing right there.

3) Boi-1da lends his production skills and you should know his track record by now. Hit Boy & Chase N. Cashe serve as the executive producers, by the way.

4) Big K.R.I.T. not only produces a track, he drops a verse too.

5) Karla did the artwork.

Speaking of Drake, at least for one night, Toronto was the epicenter of the Hip-Hop universe. Drake’s T-Dot homecoming yesterday was dubbed as the OVOFest – a concert that was weeks in the making and took only a few hours to become legendary. For a man who has been around the world and back since his rise to superstardom last year, it seems as if this show meant the most to him out of any performance. Back in front of his home crowd, the loyal fans were treated to several acts including Francis and The Lights, P. Reign, Bun B and Young Jeezy. And this was all before Drake was even spotted on stage.

Given close to two hours of stage time, the OVO frontman made sure he didn’t disappoint with more special guests than people in attendance could count. Judging from Niko’s tweet before hand, I sarcastically thought he was going to bring Barack out, thus changing the scope of music, entertainment and politics forever. Barack didn’t happen, but everyone else did.
