15. Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – 21,000 - Just being out and about, not a day goes by that I don’t hear “Beez In The Trap.” And yes, the fact 2 Chainz put “doohickey” in a song is one of the best moments of 2012. Even better, that red squiggly line doesn’t even appear when you type doohickey. The South wins again!

20. B.o.B. – Strange Clouds – 16,000 - I’m pretty sure this isn’t doing the numbers many hoped it would do (especially since his first was an overwhelming success), but with Tip apparently thinking about life after music, Grand Hustle may be Bobby Ray’s to carry.

35. Drake – Take Care – 10,000 - Look, I love my grandma more than anything in this world. So Drake postponing dates on his tour to possibly go check up on her is something I more than understand. In other news, he’s creeping up on two milli.

42. Krizz Kaliko – Kickin’ & Screamin’ – 9,500 - What having a following does for you. I’m pretty sure Krizz saw no parts of mainstream radio or TV.

54. Future – Pluto – 7,000 - If you plan on going out this weekend and partying, how many times do you expect to hear “Same Damn Time?” Over/under 50. Say what you will, Puffy bodied the remix something serious, too.

77. Killer Mike – R.A.P. Music – 5,300 - Let me tell you something. THIS is the best album of 2012 so far. And I’m not exaggerating one bit when I say it. Mike dropped a modern day classic. Too bad most won’t both to pay attention.

106. Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne – 3,500 - At some point, they’re going to have to start working on part two.

149. Ab-Soul – #ControlSystem – 3,400 - And you know, this wasn’t too shabby either. TDE just doesn’t believe in release subpar music.

Interview: Future’s Lift Off

Family connections in the music industry are rare, but not for 28-year-old, Atlanta-born (Zone 6-raised) Nayvadius Wilburn. Going by the alias Future –as in the “future of rap,” a name given to him by his pre-Future days rap crew Da Connect– he already had a helpful resource early on his career when he was just a mixtape rapper. Rico Wade, Future’s cousin and Organized Noize/Dungeon Family member who is highly responsible for the success of Outkast and Goodie Mob, encouraged Future to sharpen his writing skills, which proved to be good guidance as Future went on to release several mixtapes such as Dirty Sprite, True Story, and 1000. However, Future’s success and penchant for writing catchy sing-a-long hooks and choruses is what helped him pen hits such as the auto-tune heavy “Racks” and the street, Scarface-inspired “Tony Montana.” Those tracks along with his underground success through several mixtape releases eventually landed Future a deal with Epic Records, headed by urban music mogul LA Reid.
