On occasion, I find myself revisiting Solange’s 2008 Sol Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams. It was an enjoyable project, still vastly underrated and one that showcased the younger Knowles sister as an artist of her own; one who was capable of making high quality music completely separate of her megastar sister. It’s crazy to think it’s already been damn near four years since that dropped however. Well, for those who have been waiting for new music from the newly minted Aunt Solange, the wait is nearly over.

Her new project is still untitled, yet she did provide insight into the album to V Magazine for their V75 music issue. And the direction of her music may surprise you.

“[It's] more of a modern twist on hip-hop and R&B flecked with tinges of blues and jazz,” she said. “But there’s a lot of songs about sex.”

Solange characterizes the LP as one that fits all settings, both bedroom related and not and one that’s suitable for quality time with your significant other or preparing for a night out on the town with friends. She also reveals the album was funded completely by her and features production from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Devonté “Dev” Hynes. Aside from the sexual content of some of the records, one of the more startling quotes resulted when Solange explained why the earlier songs she recorded were dark and cryptic.

“At first the songs were really dark because I had a premonition before the record that I was going to die. I was having panic attacks and wiling out.”

At this moment, an exact release date is not known.

Solange didn’t exactly have the greatest weekend and it had nothing to do with Hurricane Irene. While in Miami, Jay-Z’s sister-in-law had a run in with law enforcement that apparently had the singer very upset and frustrated. Taken from her Twitter account:

I have literally had my last leg with discriminating police! Miami police department will be notified. A police officer just pulled a weapon on me…. I have done NOTHING illegal, against the law, or anything of the sort. I am simply tired of police using arrogance, ego and authority as an offense. I’m only tweeting this to raise awareness. I could have left quietly, but I am sick & tired of this scenario being played over & over again.

I’m ok. I’m safe & sound at my apartment. I’m just beyond frustrated with the system. It is time to do something about it. I am a mother raising a young black child in America. Im going to die trying! Been on the phone for the last 20 minutes reporting this incident. Yes, I have the officers name. Yes, I have the location.

They tried to treat her like she was DeAngelo Barksdale in Season 1 of the The Wire. Anywho, I can’t exactly see Solange doing anything to warrant a cop pulling his gun out on her. It’s not like she’s exactly physically imposing or anything like that. And it’s not like she could actually do something that bad to have a gun pulled on her. Unless she was riding around with kilos in the car. But then again, I wasn’t there either.

Julez for Japan is a watercolor designed t-shirt, inspired by the recent tragic earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. Solange Knowles’ 6 year old son, Daniel Julez. J. Smith, who was highly affected by the devastating footage he witnessed of the catastrophe, decided he wanted to contribute in some way.

Using a scan of his watercolor interpretation of the Japanese flag, generous shirt donations from American Apparel, and a sleek logo designed by Clark Butterfield, they created the “Julez for Japan” shirt.

You can visit BIG CARTEL to purchase your “Julez for Japan” t-shirt.

ALL OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO PEACE WINDS JAPAN.
