Deon Young Comes Home To NYC For BET Music Matters Showcase

Tuesday night, New York’s elite media figures and music lovers were called to Santos Party House in the name of budding talent as BET Music Matters held their monthly showcase that featured artist Deon Young. With the Remy V flowing, DJ Lyve (of BET’s 106 & Park) kept everyone in the mood for great hip-hop and R&B by spinning current hits and classic jams as the audience waited in anticipation for the headlining act.

With Harlem’s A$AP Rocky creating a huge buzz for New York in hip-hop, it just may be time for R&B’s next big star to represent the borough as well. Nineteen year old Deon Young is gunning for the number one spot and has linked up with legendary music executive Sylvia Rhone to do exactly that. Recently signed to Epic Records who houses fellow budding R&B stars like Brandon Hines, Leah Labelle and more, Young has a mature voice that was formerly used to drop bars before he decided to try his hand at singing instead.

As you may know by now, Drake cleaned up at last night’s BMI Awards. One in honor in particular happened to be “Songwriter Of The Year.” After thanking several of his friends and industry colleagues, he also took a moment to thank his mother who he credits with expanding his vocabulary at a young age.

But, there’s always a “but,” what would an awards show be without a slight bit of controversy? You never forget those who doubted you, even after achieving whatever goals you set out towards. The same stands for Drake who threw a slight shot at Sylvia Rhone. And since we’re on that subject, it’s clear to see these lyrics still hold some sort of importance to buddy.

And Sylvia be tellin’ Tez ‘Damn, Drake fly’
And he just be like silly mothafucka I know
That was yo’ bad, how could you pass up on him
He just take ‘em records and he gas up on ‘em
Wayne’ll prolly put a million cash up on him
Surprised no one ever put your ass up on him

It’s tough for anyone to land a job nowadays and the music industry is no different. Universal Music Group has been seeing shake ups in its hierachy and the latest is to none other than Sylvia Rhone. While reports say the split happened gracefully, what’s potentially next for Rhone could be a step down from what she was normally accustomed.

One source told Digital Music News that Rhone could be given leadership of an unimportant imprint, effectively neutering her power to impact artist selection and company direction.  ”Rhone might get some sort of imprint, but would lack any power,” the source shared.  At present, Universal Music Group is staying mum on the matter, though this has the markings of a delicate push.

This sort of turbulence is getting routine, and insiders predicted just this sort of treatment for legacy executives – and Doug Morris loyalists.  Just a few days ago, Universal Music Group Publishing chairman David Renzer exited the building, and sources to Digital Music News pointed to a rift with incoming UMG chairman Lucian Grainge.  Additionally, the longtime vet Renzer is suspected of carrying a hefty compensation package, always a liability in these matters.
